In many areas of the country, trees will soon be shedding their gold and red leaves signaling the onset of fall indicating winter weather is not far behind. It is advisable to start getting your furnaces ready at least a month before the onset of cold weather so that you are thoroughly prepared.

Since most people heat with natural gas, let’s use a gas furnace as our subject for this article.

The Basic Heating System Service

Typically an experienced furnace repair technician will inspect the heating system to make sure that the unit itself is working properly. They will clean the blower unit removing any dirt that may have gotten into it and oil it properly. Additionally, the technician may inspect the metal duct systems where they connect to the furnace itself, making sure there are no leaks and if necessary, repairing them with duct tape.

Before your technician leaves, he will run some tests on your unit, to be sure it is operating correctly and there are no carbon monoxide leaks. Some technicians also get up onto the roof of your house to make sure that the vent up there is not clogged with debris of any kind.

Extra Heating Accessories

If you don’t have a programmable thermostat now is an excellent time to install one. This will help to ensure that you have proper temperatures in your home at all times. You can set it so that the temperature is lowered after you go to bed at night and then turns on to warm the house just before you get up in the morning. You can also adjust it to have a cooler house during the day while you are away and then programmed to come on just before returning home to warm it up.

Be sure to have a carbon monoxide alarm also installed. They are inexpensive and can be a lifesaver! If you have experience working with electricity, you may want to install these items yourself. Always be sure to turn off the electrical breakers before starting this type of project. Otherwise, you can get an estimate and have your furnace repairman do it for you or call an electrician to do it.

Be sure to have plenty of furnace filters on hand and change them out at least once a month to keep the furnace operating at its peak performance. With your home closed up in the winter, dust and pet hair will accumulate very quickly on your filters and on your vent covers.
