An organization at the forefront of HVAC and refrigeration research and technology

As many Refrigeration School, Inc. students know, HVAC and refrigeration technology research and development are ongoing. That's why many students are studying at RSI in Phoenix, AZ in the first place - a comprehensive training program in these technologies allows students to be up to date in the industry, entering their careers ready-to-go. In order to continue staying up-to-date after graduation from RSI, you, the student, should become familiar with the resources carrying the latest news about the industry.

One great resource for RSI HVAC and refrigeration students and professionals alike is the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The site's mission statement speaks to technology and philanthropy at once - HVAC and refrigeration advances do, indeed, serve humanity as well as the environment. ASHRAE has been around since 1894, and continues to promote "advancement, leadership, integrity, service, and excellence," according to the society's Web site.

RSI students (and graduates) should strongly consider becoming members of ASHRAE. There is a special student membership available, as well. What's the incentive for you, a student, to get involved before you even begin your career? First, membership is a great resume-builder. Extracurriculars or volunteer work that show a student's devotion to heating, cooling, and air conditioning make that student a more attractive candidate for a job. Secondly, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers gives students opportunities to stay up-to-date with the training and development aspects of the HVAC and refrigeration industry. That's pretty powerful stuff!

Reading industry literature and periodicals is a key way to stay current in any industry. Just as business professionals read the Wall Street Journal and newspaper and other media professionals subscribe to Editor and Publisher magazine, HVAC and refrigeration professionals have media outlets through which they can stay current on industry hot topics. ASHRAE publishes its own journal, and membership grants you access to other industry periodicals and research. The site also grants all visitors access to a weekly newsletter, called The HVAC&R Industry.

ASHRAE also offers career services to members. These services give RSI students and grads additional opportunities to find and apply for positions that will be right for them. The career services section of the site functions much the way a generalized job board such as Monster.com does. You can upload a resume and cover letter, and expose your credentials to multiple employers. Many employers looking for qualified workers have accounts, and they are reading resumes, looking for new hires just like you. That's also powerful incentive to join the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers!

The "Technology" section of the ASHRAE site provides you with the latest information about refrigeration and HVAC research and development. Information conveyed in this section includes heating and cooling standards, green technologies, and research prototypes for new technologies. If you're more of a political person than a science person, the site also features an "Advocacy" section. Hot topics discussed in this section include efforts to fund education for HVAC and refrigeration students and professionals; climate and greenhouse-friendly technology developments; energy-efficient building standards, and educational diversity. An ASHRAE membership is a great way to get involved in the issues that concern you, be they scientific or political - and in HVAC-R, happily, there is often a good deal of overlap.

Because HVAC and refrigeration professionals must stay current on technology and applications throughout the course of their careers, ASHRAE's Web site also features an "Education" section. There is a whole segment of the Education section devoted to online learning. Members can enroll in courses or seminars to explore the HVAC and refrigeration fields in greater depth, or to learn additional technologies and skills. The site also offers self-study texts so students and professionals alike can broaden their knowledge bases.

Most importantly for students, the ASHRAE Web site offers a section especially for you. There are ongoing education resources, applications for grants and scholarships, and job search tips just for students. If you join, you should spend extra time in the Student section of the Web site, exploring all of your career options, and finding out as much about the HVAC and refrigeration field as you possibly can. Visit the Web site of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, and sign up for a membership today!
