Electrical Career Opportunities

The title "Electrician" seems to have a mystical quality for some people. Perhaps a look at a building project will reveal why.

Once a building project is given the go ahead by a developer, the first thing that happens before any real work goes on is the electricians install any underground cables necessary before above ground construction can begin. It is the job of electricians to provide temporary power for tools and lighting on all construction jobs and on all floors of a multi-story building. As the building goes up, electricians are involved in every phase of the project, installing the service entrance, conduit, and all wiring. In the case of a hotel, they will also provide for the different needs of the building since the kitchen circuitry and power requirements are different from the rooms. Once the building is nearing completion, the electricians are back again installing electrical fixtures for lights, fans, switches, automatic doors, etc.

Electricians are critical to new construction from start to finish, but they don't stop there. They are required to keep a building functional from the time it is opened until it is condemned. For some structures this could be a span of 60, 80, or even 100 years. Any time a casino wants to move their slot machines, or a manufacturer wants to move their machine shop, or a school needs to replace a ballast in a light fixture, the electricians are called to do their part.

Educational Objective

The objective of this course is to train and prepare students for entry level positions as New Construction and Maintenance Electricians in the Electrical Industry. A student is required to complete each phase of training with a proven degree of competency. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should have an understanding of electrical principles, the National Electric Code (NEC), and how these apply to common buildings and facilities which are the necessary skills to enter these fields. It is understood that to become an expert in any field requires dedication, hard work, continued schooling and most certainly possessing the proper attitudes, drive and motivation.

Electrical Classes

Electrical Principles

Students will learn on training stations designed by RSI for application of electrical techniques. These include low voltage control circuits as well as line voltage circuits for air conditioning and heat pump systems. Also in this phase students will learn about single and three phase motors along with single and multi-speed motors; students will also do motor testing using electrical meters. The student will test for voltage, amperage, and resistance. This phase also covers basic transformers and power sources.

Residential Wiring Applications

Students will learn to use and interpret the National Electrical Code (NEC). They will learn how to wire switches, receptacles, light fixtures and fans. As they progress through Residential Wiring Applications, they will learn about photocells, dimmers and GFCI's. They will also learn the different circuits in a dwelling, the tools and safety requirements and practices. They will wire a downsized three bedroom dwelling installing all required circuits according to the NEC.

Commercial Wiring Techniques

In Commercial Wiring Techniques students will delve deeper into and learn more about the NEC. Students will also wire three phase motors, auto timers, fluorescent lighting, high pressure and mercury lamps. Students will learn job estimating, how to size feeder circuits for residential and commercial applications, how to wire service panels and size and install circuit breakers. Students will also learn to bend conduit and install and wire a downsized office building.
