Find growth in an HVAC and refrigeration career
Students enrolled in the HVAC, refrigeration, heating, and cooling certification program at the Refrigeration School, Inc., have a variety of career options at their fingertips when they graduate from the school.
When students finish training courses at RSI, they will have a refrigeration and HVAC certification. This certification lays a good foundation for entry-level refrigeration, heating, and cooling technician jobs. Just like students did during their training programs, they will continue to work with their hands when they begin entry-level careers.

Because so much of refrigeration and HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair work is hands-on, students are trained using the STAR system. This system offers students simulations of HVAC, heating, and cooling issues and problems they are actually likely to face on the job. Students can use refrigeration or HVAC repair equipment and technicians' tools to diagnose and repair problems in real time, before they must actually face these issues on the job, with no instructor present.
More importantly, the STAR system trains students to approach HVAC/R troubleshooting and repair work with the right mindset. Mechanical ability is paramount to success in this career field. More importantly, however, RSI's refrigeration and HVAC training and certification program teaches students the critical-thinking, problem solving, and strong interpersonal communication skills necessary to work in the field. Many refrigeration or HVAC technicians go into people's homes to work on heating and cooling equipment. For a mechanic to effectively work in someone's residence, he or she must appear knowledgeable, and, more importantly, trustworthy.
Heating and Cooling certification: learning while doing for job-site success
Critical thinking skills also help technicians adapt to technological advances in HVAC and refrigeration equipment, enabling them to stay abreast of the latest trends. A student's education will be current in the field upon leaving school; however, ten years down the road, what the student learned in class will not necessarily be current. The refrigeration and HVAC certification and training experience teaches students how to think about and approach diagnosis and maintenance of heating, cooling, and refrigeration equipment, so they can readily adapt to new or sudden changes in equipment technologies. The most employable refrigeration and HVAC technicians are those individuals who can quickly adapt to new working conditions and cutting-edge heating and cooling technologies.
Many refrigeration and HVAC technicians in training must complete an apprenticeship in the field, which can take up a significant amount of time. However, at RSI, students are immediately employable in the heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration fields. The Career Development Department at RSI maintains a relationship with employers in the field to provide opportunities for graduates to find jobs. Many graduates are working in the industry right after they graduate.
Dream big: In-depth HVAC and refrigeration career training
Students who want a more in-depth approach to the study of heating and cooling equipment repair and installation can enroll in the Associate of Occupational Studies in Mechanical Maintenance Engineering. This professional degree program allows students to pursue the study of refrigeration, heating, and cooling in greater detail. The coursework goes into refrigeration and HVAC topic areas such as coolers and compressors — as well as electrical topics such as transformers and motors — in greater depth, effectively combining the electrician and HVAC/R programs of study. Students are prepared not only for HVAC/R and electrical careers, but also for more complex or supervisory professional roles.
It's also possible for students to continue their education beyond The Refrigeration School, Inc. The associate degree at the school can be matriculated into a University of Phoenix bachelor degree, so students can further refine and narrow their educational focus. With additional training and field experience, students can command higher salaries and continue to move up in the HVAC/R or electrical field. By making the most of their education and certification, working hard on the job, and remaining up to date in new technology, RSI students will have fulfilling and growth-oriented careers ahead of them.
