Seeking Success at The Refrigeration School, Inc. - and beyond!RSI of Phoenix, AZ
Congratulations on being accepted to The Refrigeration School, Inc.! You are now prepared to invest time in education and training that will last you a lifetime. But, to get a return on that investment, you must be prepared to work hard and maximize your time spent in school.
This might be your first experience with post-high-school training. Or, you might have already gone to college, and are looking for a career change. Whatever your experience, take some tips from RSI that will help you to make the most of your refrigeration and HVAC training.

Pay attention!
If you aren't at the top of your mental faculties during each new class, you won't succeed. Listen to what your instructors are telling you, and watch what they are showing you closely. These are folks who have years of experience in the HVAC-R field. They're telling you exactly what you need to succeed on the job. It's a great gift!

Schedule time
Setting aside time for learning and studying should be your top priority. Trying to study for classes when you are tired, anxious, short on time, or hung over is a recipe for disaster. In order to study effectively, you need a quiet space and a cozy place. Make sure your study area is well-lit, and that you have all of your course materials on hand. Ensure that you study when you have enough time to do so.
But...don't procrastinate
The longer you put off studying, the less you will want to study. While you're in school, learning should be your top priority. If you schedule too many hours of work or too many “fun” events, and don't block in enough time to study, the likelihood of you finishing your work is low. Remember: School is Number 1; everything else is second.
Go above and beyond
Some students take the “barely getting by” approach to school. They show up to class, slump in their seats, and tune out the teacher. Their failure to grasp course materials leaves them empty-handed when it comes time to seek meaningful employment.
Don't be one of these students. Show up to class on time and prepared. That's the minimum requirement for success. Asking questions during class; staying after to discuss difficult course material with instructors; and seeking additional information and learning resources outside of the RSI classroom (a current HVAC field professional; an HVAC meeting group; informative library books) are ways to go above and beyond.
Make sure you have enough money to live on
Getting into further debt during school can be troublesome. You will be paying off that debt for a long time. A major advantage to attending a training school like RSI is that your tendency to rack up excessive debt will be lessened. However, it's all too easy to get caught up in the trap of putting food, bills, and fun times on your credit cards. You will be paying later.
Whether your school funding comes from parents, loans, or part-time jobs, budgeting your income and expenses and sticking to that budget will pay off. You'll be able to enter your first HVAC or refrigeration job free from worries about how you will meet future payments and make future bills.
Make friends...but make the right ones
Post-secondary schooling is a time of great learning and great fun. You will, no doubt, meet wonderful men and women in your Refrigeration School, Inc. classes. Some of these people might become like brothers and sisters to you.
However, you might make friends with a jerk. Jerks can be found anywhere; you can easily befriend a jerk at a coffee shop or bar. Be wary of jerks – people who waste your time, who always seem to have crisis-level problems in their lives, or who abuse drugs and alcohol. These people are roadblocks to your success at RSI.
Avoid drugs, limit alcohol consumption
It's tempting to party hard when you're away from home or on your own. Why not? No one's around to tell you “no.” Everyone else is doing it. It's fun. It's the “cool” thing to do.
Drugs and alcohol can quickly become addictive. When they do, you wind up spending all of your time at RSI thinking about scoring more intoxicants. That leaves you with little time to care about your classes. Even if you only party to excess on the weekends, come Monday, you'll be dehydrated, hung over, and fuzzy-brained. That's no way to begin a school week.
Take care of yourself
Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and drinking enough fluids are all necessary to your success at RSI. If you don't take care of your body and mind, you can't learn.
Have fun, too! Take time out for your favorite leisure activity. Visit with friends, hang out at a cool cafe, or go to the amusement park now and then. These activities are relaxing, and will build great memories of your time at RSI that you'll have for years to come.
