You’ve taken the first step in expanding your career opportunities by attending a vocational training school, but how do you ensure success? Following are five student success tips that can help you meet your education and career goals.

1. Get Organized and Manage Time Better

The first priority on your list should be organizing and managing your time. 1 Becoming more organized is as simple as putting things in their place and having a place for everything. Create to-do lists in a weekly planner, filling in your HVAC classes and work, and blocking out times for studying and breaks. Refer to your planner daily, prioritizing your assignments so that you can always stay on top of them.

2. Stop Procrastinating

Procrastinating is probably one of the biggest problems for students. Don’t wait until the last minute to complete assignments for your electrician classes. Don’t put off studying for that refrigeration test. You have a schedule—stick with it and keep it updated. If you find yourself pressed for time, write a list of everything you typically do in a day and see if there’s anything you can cut out.

3. Study Smarter

The American Psychological Association has a couple of tips for getting more out of your study sessions. 2

  1. First, plan to study in sessions that are spaced out over time, which will help with long-term retention of the information. For example, study three hours every week on a subject like the fundamentals of electricity for four weeks, rather than try to cram 12 hours of learning into the fourth week.
  2. Thirdly, test yourself. Testing can be a useful tool to help you learn. If you make yourself recall information, it will help strengthen your memory of it.

Other great study tips include finding a few different quiet places to study, studying in intervals no more than 90 minutes at a time, and regularly doing your homework. 3

4. Exercise and Eat Right

You know that exercising and eating right are healthy for you, but did you know it’s good for your brain? Harvard Medical School states that exercise improves your thinking skills and your memory. 4 Get on a regular exercise schedule. Exercising doesn’t have to be difficult: try walking, bicycling, or swimming. You’ll give yourself a break from studying and you’ll feel better too.

5. Start Planning Ahead

In trade schools, training is often less than two years, so it’s important to plan for your future now. That means getting your resume together, going to career fairs, networking, and finding out what companies might have your dream job. Start talking with the school’s career services representatives so that you’ll have a great position lined up when you graduate.

Achieve Student Success in 2016

Making study habit adjustments doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little planning and extra effort, you’ll find that these adjustments will help you stay on track and further your career goals. You may even find that they help make student life less stressful.
